On Friday September 11, 1931 Doodnauth Jagnandan was born in Vreed en Hoop, West Cost Demarara Guyana, a place where he would always call home. As one of the first rice-farming families to settle in Vreed en Hoop, life came with many challenges. With the passing of his mother at an early age, he assumed the responsibilities of his seven siblings.

Doodnauth married the love of his life Dewanie, at the age of 19. Together they have enjoyed 65 years of marriage and prosperity – even up until his last days he referred to her as “honey.” They have grown their family to include eight children, fifteen grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Doodnauth and Dewanie immigrated to Edmonton on his 50th birthday in 1980 to be with his children, where they would work and later retire in 1996 before moving to Toronto. His ultimate plan in life was always to divide his time between Guyana and Toronto, and he and Dewanie would enjoy these travels for the next twenty years.

Beyond his loved ones, Doodnauth’s greatest passion was cultivating his garden. His home in Vreed en Hoop is recognized as a landmark – the “flower house” – for its colorful floral and fauna that adorns the front yard to this very day.

Doodnauth Jagnandan’s legacy will continue to live on through his family and we are honored to have his everlasting presences in our lives.
